Every story has a beginning. Ours begins in 1832.

Time, taste and history

A place where Heidelberg's coffee house culture has been cultivated for generations – with genuine craftsmanship and a lot of soul.

Since its founding by MC Krall in 1832, the sweet heart of Heidelberg has beaten at Hauptstraße 94. Today, run by Martina Schafheutle-Kübel and her son Julian Kübel, it is much more than a coffee house: It is a meeting place, a piece of city history, and a home for authentic craftsmanship. Here, we actively train our artisans, thus safeguarding traditional expertise for the future.

Those who stop here are not entering a chain, but a world of chocolates, cakes, and tradition – and perhaps following in the footsteps of former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who loved our Schafheutle cake with nougat cream and almond meringue base even as a student – and remained loyal to it for decades.

Our ingredients: time, dedication and the best raw materials

In our in-house bakery, we create delicious gateaux, chocolates, cakes, and ice cream every day—lovingly handcrafted with the finest ingredients and completely preservative-free.

What drives us? A passion for authentic craftsmanship. Our recipes have evolved over generations – we preserve them with respect, refine them with experience, and imbue them with personality.

Thanks to our in-house training, we maintain sound specialist knowledge and craftsmanship – a foundation on which our quality rests.

Because for us, it's not about trends, but about honest taste that lasts. And the good feeling of enjoying something special.

A place with a past – and a future

Before chocolates were made here, mulberry trees for silkworms grew in what is now the garden. Later, a tobacco factory was located on the site. The café was not opened until 1933 – exactly where the Elector's garden had been located in the 16th century.

Today, this floor supports everything our guests love: coffee tables, flowers, life.

A look behind the scenes

Directly behind the shop lies the heart of our production. This is where all our delicacies are created – from butter cookies to truffles to wedding cakes.

With an eye for detail and a love of craftsmanship. And all this happens not just anywhere, but within the historic walls of the former Landfried tobacco factory, which has housed our bakery since 1935. Here, craftsmanship thrives on historic ground.

With tradition into the future

Since 2010, we've been committed to sustainable business practices – with resource-efficient renovations, the switch to green electricity, and our online chocolate delivery service. We save over 80 tons of CO₂ annually.

What remains:
Our commitment to genuine craftsmanship, personal touch, and uncompromising quality.
